Quetzalcoatl, 7 Serpents and the Secret Destiny of America
The plumed or feathered serpent is an all encompassing icon, combining the underworldly powers of the serpent with the soaring solar capabilities of the eagle or phoenix.
In a piece I wrote last year called “Mound Builders, Kundalini and The Hidden Signs of the Serpent”, I took an initiatory dive into the primordial waters of the serpent to explore her many chthonic pathways. Twas an exploratory brain spill to foster further discovery of all things serpentine and snake-like. I write these things because I learn through claircognizant revelation- So, a few days after publishing the initial piece it struck me (Duh!) that Serpent iconography as it relates to the mythology, life, pyramids and mounds of ancient North Americans has everything to do with the “Atlantean” god Quetzalcoatl.
In the many waves of meso-American lore including Mayan, Aztec, Toltec, and present day Mexican culture- Quetzalcoatl or the “plumed serpent” is a recurring meme. He’s known by many different names cross culturally like any good wandering God-man would.
According to Manly P Halls’ iconic book on this subject called America’s Assignment With Destiny, “It is now generally admitted that the Quetzalcoatl of the Nahuatlan people, the Gucumatz of the Quiches and the Kukulcan of the more Southern Mayas were one person. In each language, the word signifies feathered, plumed or winged serpent. This title may have resulted from Quetzalcoatl casting his lot among, or gathering his first followers from the descendants of Votan. This tribal group had the serpent as its heraldic device. At a remote time this semi-mystical, semi-divine priest initiate Quetzalcoatl came from the fabled land of the “seven colors” and established his rite at Tula and Cholula”
Mirroring many very interesting stories from Native American tribes, Quetzalcoatl is illustrated as an outsider who arrives via the sea who shares his civilizing knowledge and life enhancing technology with locals- Quickly gaining followers and a venerated, god-like status through practicing his peaceful doctrine. He’s been physically described as “a white man with a strong formation of body, broad forehead, large eyes, and a flowing beard. He wore a miter on his head and was dressed in a long white robe reaching his feet, and covered with a design of red (tau) crosses. In his hand he held a sickle “
The plumed or feathered serpent is an all encompassing icon, combining the underworldly powers of the serpent with the soaring solar capabilities of the eagle or phoenix. Quetzalcoatl is capable of uniting both ascending and descending functions, making him an “all father” deity of both solar and lunar qualities. Therefore, he and his magical tribesman were beyond the duality of the eagle and serpent, the symbolic separation which annihilates humanity to this very day.
This realization begs the question… If Quetzalcoatl transceded duality in times before Christ and we are very much submerged in that separation today- Are we not fragmenting and degenerating in polar opposition to the progressive doctrine of contemporary popular culture? I believe humanity is traveling in a descending pattern through the underworld just as the initiates of Quetzalcoatl had to find passage through the subterranean tunnels of the Yucatan before ascending to the solar throne.
To further quote Manly P Hall, “It is specifically mentioned by Sahagun that Quetzalcoatl created a built houses under the earth. Traces of subterranean grottoes and rooms have been discovered in the vicinity of most of the architectural monuments of the Nahuas. … The Amerindians believed the serpent to be an earth dweller and it is quite possible that accounts implied these subterranean and secret places to be chambers of initiation into the mysteries of the cult. According to de Bourbourg, the Mexican demigod Votan made a journey through the subterranean passage which, running underground, terminated at the root of heaven. This passage was “a snakes hole” and Votan was admitted because he himself was “a son of a snake.”
Strangely, most major pyramids and structures in the Yucatan are constructed over subterranean chambers called Cenotes which are both sources of clean water and spiritual manifestations of the lower worlds.
The iconography of the plumed serpent, Quetzalcoatl, can be found scattered among the many Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza where the incredible engineering skills of this highly sophisticated society is on full display. I was lucky enough to witness the descent of the plumed serpent at Chichen Itza with my own eyes close to the spring equinox of this year.
This 9 step pyramid was designed to create the descent of the plumed serpent out of the late afternoon sunlight during equinoxes- Does this type of engineering seem like something a primitive and archaic civilization could construct?
Interestingly enough, to the northeast of the main 9 stage pyramid at Chichen Itza is a “Venus Platform” covered in symbolic iconography aligning with the placement of the “morning star”. Astro theologically speaking, Quetzalcoatl or the plumed serpent is associated with the planet Venus which travels its synodic cycle, tracing a pentagram in its ecliptic.
If we take a closer look at the right side of the Venus Platform we’ll notice a peculiar glyph which looks like a DNA strand, if we count the notches in the strand we’ll find there’s 7 which is a sacred number relating to Quetzalcoatl.
Just north of the Venus platform is the famous “Death Ball” court where many a tour guide can be heard spinning yarns to Western minded tourists regarding the vast amounts of human sacrifices they falsely claim happened there. However. on the side walls of the court lie some of the best preserved panels of Mayan glyphs which tell a story of symbolic decapitation. Pictured below you can count the 7 serpents which emerge from the neck of the players body post head removal surgery.
Researchers like Freddy Silva suggest the 7 serpents represent the star system Pleiades as an astro theological allegory of a possible planetary homeplace. The Septenary of 7 can unravel into an innumerable crescendo of esoteric and exoteric meanings. For example, the 7 chakras running up the spine which channel the “primordial waters” of cerebral spinal fluid, the seven seals in the bible, the planet Saturn or the 7 luminary planets from which sacred time is divined.
My personal speculation is that the 7 serpents growing from the root of the severed head represent the dispersion of Atlantean god-men from the land of the “seven colors” tasked with sharing otherworldly, magical, and advanced knowledge with the meso-American portion of the world. Meaning Quetzalcoatl and his “tribe of light” wandered about the America's sharing their peaceful tradition which heightened humanity to a level of excellence that today cannot even be properly conceptualized or understood within the confines of our material based reality.
If we allow ourselves to further connect the aforementioned Ohio Serpent Mound and hundreds of other megalithic sites dedicated to the serpent around the United States with the descendants of Quetzalcoatl- We can realize the immense impact this serpent deity had on Ancient American Culture which lies suspiciously hidden in plain sight to this very day.
To quote Manly P Hall for one last time, “Pryse suggests that the god Quetzalcoatl was known in Peru under the name of Amaru. He writes: “From the latter name comes our word America. Amaruca is, literally translated, “Land of the Plumed Serprent.”
Quetzalcoatl and the temple’s built to revere the plumed serpent represent a conjunction of the primordial waters of the serpent and the primordial fire of the phoenix; The unity of the opposing forces; The melding of the fire and ice; The peaceful plurality of higher knowledge… The true heritage of America’s megalithic past which the many “Native American” tribes carry a remnant of.
The iconography of the present epoch encompasses the fiery, masculine ethos of the phoenix who claims victory at any cost. Like the soaring solar energy of the American eagle who divebombs the serpent from above, driving it out of its subterranean hole.
The resultant imbalance of the light without the dark, the solar without the lunar, the eagle without the serpent, the god without the goddess looms large in the shadows of the modern psyche. It manifests itself in the cultural degeneration growing boundlessly all around us- A symbol of the eclipsing of the ages many civilizations including the Mayans have experienced before.
But as the ruins of deep antiquity are slowly uncovered, as the glyphs are deciphered one by one and the toppled monuments are stood back up in the halls of our quintessential bodies- The same elucidating knowledge once shared by Quetzalcoatl may be able to flood back into the consciousness of discerning initiates (after their perilous underworld journey, of course).
